As the Chamber approaches the upcoming Board election later this year, this is your chance to step up, contribute to our vibrant business community, and help shape the future of the western Bay of Plenty’s business community.

Hi, I’m Debbie Ireland, current Chair of the Tauranga Business Chamber Board. I’m a longtime Chamber member with my business Digital Workplace Results (DWR).

I can personally attest to the incredible impact and fulfilment that comes with being on the role. Serving on the Board has allowed me to work closely with a dedicated team of professionals who are passionate about making a positive difference in our community. The relationships I’ve built and the insights I’ve gained have been invaluable.

I encourage anyone who is passionate about local business and community development to consider standing for election later this year. Your unique perspectives and skills can help us continue to grow and deliver excellent value for our members.

Here’s everything you need to know about what the Board does, the expectations, the benefits, and how you can get involved:

What Does the Board Do?

The Board of the Tauranga Business Chamber plays a crucial role in providing governance and strategic oversight for our organisation. We’re the Bay of Plenty’s hub of business support, insights, and connections, and we take that role seriously. Board members are elected by the Chamber’s wider membership at the Annual General Meeting for a 2-year term. Their primary responsibilities include:

  • Governance Oversight: Ensuring that the Chamber’s activities align with its bylaws, policies, and strategic goals.
  • Financial Oversight: Approving budgets, monitoring financial health, and ensuring fiduciary responsibility.
  • Strategic Direction: Setting the long-term strategic goals and ensuring alignment with the Chamber’s mission and values.

We work closely with the Chamber’s CEO and staff to implement these strategies and ensure the smooth operation of the Chamber’s activities. This collaboration is essential for driving our mission to support and champion local businesses throughout the Bay of Plenty.

What’s Involved and Expected?

Being a Board member is a rewarding experience, which comes with responsibilities. Here’s what you can expect in terms of workload and time commitment:

  • Meeting Attendance: Board members typically meet for up to 2-hours a month, 10 times a year, covering a range of strategic decisions and operational oversight.
  • Preparation and Participation: Members are expected to prepare for meetings by reviewing the prepared documents and reports. Active participation in discussions and decision-making processes is essential. It’s great to attend Chamber events when you are available.
  • Additional Commitments: Depending on the needs of the Chamber, Board members may also be involved in sub-committees or special projects that align with their expertise and interests. You can also be a champion for the Chamber by promoting us to your wider network to boost our impact.

The Board is made up of seven members, and they’re able to co-opt others onto the Board as they deem necessary. The Board reports to members each year at the annual general meeting, typically held in October.

Within the Board, there are three key roles: Chair, Deputy Chair and Treasurer. These roles are decided by the elected Board at their first meeting.

Benefits of Being on the Board

Serving on the Board of the Tauranga Business Chamber offers numerous benefits, both personally and professionally:

  • Networking Opportunities: Connect with other business leaders and influencers in the community.
  • Professional Development: Gain valuable experience in governance, strategic planning, and leadership.
  • Community Impact: Play a key role in shaping the future of Tauranga’s business environment and supporting local businesses.
  • Recognition: Enhance your professional reputation and visibility within the business community.

How to Get Elected

The election process for the Board is straightforward and inclusive. Here’s a brief overview of the steps involved:

  • Nomination: Any current financial member of the Chamber can be nominated to stand for election. Keep an eye out for the call for nominations in August.
  • Campaigning: Once nominated, candidates can campaign to garner support from fellow Chamber members.
  • Voting: If there are more nominations than available seats, an online election will be held. Members will vote to elect their preferred candidates.
  • Results: The election results will be confirmed at the AGM in late September.

Detailed information about the upcoming election will be released in July, or feel free to contact the Chamber’s CEO (ceo@tauranga.org.nz) if you have any specific questions.

Joining the Board is a fantastic opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the region’s business community.

If you’re passionate about local business and want to make a difference, consider standing for election this September. You just need to ensure you’re a financial member of the Chamber.

Let’s work together to champion and enable a thriving business community in Tauranga!
