For Pieter Kock and Elvin Infante, starting a business together had been a long-time goal – one often discussed over a shared love of golf.
Originally from South Africa and Australia, the pair found themselves comparing how the game and its culture differs around the world. And, along the way, noticed something was missing.
“We felt some courses had lost that traditional, old-school clubhouse atmosphere,” says Pieter. “That real sense of community and belonging.”
The pair wanted to bring that feeling back, but building a golf course from scratch wasn’t an option. Instead, they found a different path: indoor golf.
Before taking the leap, they accessed Tauranga Business Chamber’s free one-hour of business advice – a step Pieter says proved invaluable in the early stages.
“It was very helpful. We were asked some really targeted questions that helped clarify our thinking and gave us confidence we were on the right track.”
The session also opened doors to trusted local expertise, he says.
“We were introduced to accountants and lawyers we could rely on, which made a big difference early on.”
That initial support grew into an ongoing relationship. As The Clubhouse developed, the Chamber helped with SEO and provided opportunities to connect through Business After 5 and other networking events.
“That ongoing support has been a big part of getting us off the ground,” says Pieter.
Like many start-ups, the journey wasn’t without challenges, from financing setbacks to navigating complex building compliance and licensing requirements.
Having access to practical advice and strong networks made those hurdles easier to manage, says Pieter.
He encourages other aspiring business owners to take advantage of the Chamber’s free business advice service.
“You get practical advice, local knowledge, and connections you wouldn’t easily find on your own.
“And, because it’s free, it removes one more barrier when you’re starting out.”
Launching in March, The Clubhouse has brought their original vision to life – combining high-end golf simulation with a relaxed, social environment designed to be inclusive and welcoming.
“It’s a place where people can play, connect, and belong,” says Pieter.
The Clubhouse can be found at 46 Grey Street, Tauranga.
