The Clubhouse: Five lessons for new business owners

Starting a business is never without its surprises, something The Clubhouse co-founder Pieter Kock knows firsthand.

After launching Tauranga’s newest indoor golf venue, Pieter is sharing some key lessons learned along the way, offering practical advice for anyone looking at starting a new business.

1. Ask more questions than you think you need to

One of the biggest advantages of being new to an industry is fresh perspective, says Pieter.

“We’ve learned that sometimes you can come up with better solutions simply because you’re looking at things differently.”

He encourages new business owners to reach out widely and not be afraid to ask for help.

“Most people are surprisingly willing to share their experience if you just ask.”

2. Understand compliance and fit-out requirements early

One of the biggest unexpected challenges for The Clubhouse was navigating building compliance.

Changing their space to meet hospitality requirements came with significant additional costs, from accessible bathrooms to ventilation systems and fire safety upgrades.

“These requirements can have a big impact on both your timeline and your budget, so it’s much better to understand them upfront.”

3. Expect financing hurdles and stay flexible

The Clubhouse’s first bank loan application was declined, forcing the team to regroup and explore other options.

Not long after, they secured funding through a different avenue, but only after adapting to new conditions.

“It’s important to stay flexible and keep looking for alternatives,” says Pieter. “A ‘no’ doesn’t mean the end.”

4. Build relationships early, they will matter later

From council staff to banking contacts and future employees, relationships played a critical role in getting The Clubhouse across the line.

When their bar manager fell through just weeks before opening, it was those connections that helped them quickly find a replacement.

“You never know when you’ll need to call on your network.”

5. Plan for delays because they will happen

Delays in construction and compliance approvals created flow-on effects, including staffing challenges and timing pressures around licensing.

“Even with the best planning, things will take longer than expected,” he says. “Build that into your timeline wherever you can.”

For Pieter, the experience has reinforced that, while starting a business comes with challenges, the right support and mindset can make all the difference.

“It’s a big journey, but it’s worth it. And you don’t have to do it alone.”
